College Programs
The College program addresses an increasingly demanding requirement of the telecommunications industry and business for technical expertise combined with business skills. The program's goal is to provide students with an advanced technical knowledge of applied telecommunications integrated with a solid grounding in business management techniques.
Each sector of industry (government, regulatory, common carrier, financial, equipment vendor, consultant, R&D) will have corresponding profiles of professionals who need the same technical expertise and set of management skills. Vendor marketing people will want to extend their education into more serious marketing studies, just as a staff supervisor in a regulatory agency may wish to extend his/her studies into more extensive treatments of law and government. This degree program builds an advanced foundation for more specialized study while enabling professionals from all industry sectors to understand and interact with the corporate communications professionals who, in a market-driven industry, make the decisions on how businesses will implement telecommunications.
A particular profile model of a student in this program is likely to be an individual who is or aspires to be a manager or supervisor in a large corporation's or government agency's communications department. The student will typically be responsible for various aspects of planning, implementation and management of the physical systems that satisfy the corporate requirements for voice, video and data communications. The goal of this student is not to become an advanced systems engineer, but a management professional responsible for decisions involving large annual expenditures for acquisition, installation, maintenance and management of telecommunications networks and systems. The backgrounds of students varies in terms of undergraduate degrees: typically engineering, computer science or business.
Specialized courses are available in the areas of telecommunications technologies, business information networks, fiber optics, project management, and wireless networking.
